FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can both eyes be treated together?
In most cases both eyes can be treated on the same day with LASIK. The benefits of this will be discussed with you individually at your consultation. PRK is normally performed on only one eye at a time with a 3 month gap between each procedure.

How quickly will I see the results?
With LASIK most patients experience an immediate improvement in their vision. With PRK, a patch is applied to the eye for a few days after treatment while the surface of the cornea settles and heals. During these first few days your vision will be slightly blurred, but you should then notice improvement in your sight over the following weeks.

Will my private health insurance cover this procedure?
No. Most health insurance companies do not cover corrective laser eye treatment. Although some "health care fund" schemes do contribute towards some of the costs.

What is the success rate?
Studies have consistently reported excellent results for LASIK treatment, with most patients achieving the legal standard for driving without glasses. The ophthalmic consultant will advise you on the results you can realistically expect, based on your prescription, age and other individual factors. A small percentage of patients, particularly those with higher prescriptions, may still require glasses for occasional activities but their sight is still greatly improved.

Is it safe?
The simple answer is yes. Like all medical procedures there will be, no matter how small, some degree of risk of complications. The consultant will fully explain all potential complications and how these can be dealt with, at your individual consultation. Laser procedures are designed with safety in mind and this is our main priority. LASIK is safer than wearing contact lenses for 2 years.

How can I find out more?
Please let us have a copy of your spectacle prescription and your date of birth and we will advise you whether it is worth booking a consultation. There is no charge for this service. Alternatively book an appointment for a complete assessment and consultation with the ophthalmic surgeon to find out if you could be free from the inconvenience of glasses or contact lenses.
